App Store screenshot sizes for iPhone
Which pixel dimensions Apple accepts, which sets are mandatory, and why uploading the largest size is usually enough.
Last updated: 27 August 2026
Upload one set at 1290 × 2796 px (6.7″/6.9″ class) and, if App Store Connect asks for it, one at 1242 × 2688 px or 1284 × 2778 px (6.5″). Apple scales the other sizes from those. Screenshots must be PNG or JPEG, RGB, with no transparency and no rounded corners.
The sizes, by device class
An iPhone screenshot is simply the screen in points multiplied by its scale factor. Every figure below is that arithmetic, not a convention:
| Device class | Points | Scale | Pixels (portrait) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.9″ — 16 Pro Max | 440 × 956 | 3× | 1320 × 2868 |
| 6.7″ — 15/16 Plus, 14/15 Pro Max | 430 × 932 | 3× | 1290 × 2796 |
| 6.5″ — 11 Pro Max, XS Max | 414 × 896 | 3× | 1242 × 2688 |
| 6.5″ — 12/13 Pro Max | 428 × 926 | 3× | 1284 × 2778 |
| 6.3″ — 16 Pro | 402 × 874 | 3× | 1206 × 2622 |
| 6.1″ — 14 Pro, 15, 16 | 393 × 852 | 3× | 1179 × 2556 |
| 6.1″ — 12/13/14 | 390 × 844 | 3× | 1170 × 2532 |
| 5.5″ — 8 Plus | 414 × 736 | 3× | 1242 × 2208 |
Check Apple's own page before you upload. The list of required sets has changed several times, most recently when the 6.9″ class appeared. The pixel arithmetic above is stable — a 393 pt screen at 3× is 1179 px whatever Apple decides — but which sets are mandatory is Apple's call and it moves.
Why you rarely need every size
App Store Connect scales a larger set down to the smaller classes. In practice that means one carefully made 6.7″ set covers most of the catalogue. Two caveats, both worth knowing before you build ten sets:
- Scaling is not cropping. A 1290 × 2796 image scaled to a 6.5″ slot keeps its aspect ratio, so nothing is cut — but fine text loses definition. Anything smaller than roughly 28 px in the source will read as mush after downscaling.
- Aspect ratios differ slightly between classes. 1290 × 2796 is 1:2.167; 1242 × 2688 is 1:2.164. Close enough that Apple handles it, far enough that a design pinned to the very edge can shift by a pixel or two.
The technical rules that get uploads rejected
- PNG or JPEG only. Not HEIC, not WebP.
- RGB colour space. A CMYK export from a print tool is refused.
- No alpha channel. This is the most common rejection: a PNG exported with transparency fails even if nothing looks transparent.
- No rounded corners and no device frame baked in — Apple draws the frame.
- Between 3 and 10 screenshots per device class, in the order you upload them.
Getting the pixels exactly right
The reliable route is to design on a canvas whose width divides cleanly into the target. We work at 923 px wide, which is a 393 pt screen at 2.3486×; exporting at 1179 px is then a single multiplication with no resampling of the layout itself. Any canvas works as long as you scale the whole design rather than nudging elements afterwards.
