Why a mockup with live prices reads differently

A still screen and a moving one carry the same information and are believed differently. The difference only appears past about two seconds.

Two seconds

Below about two seconds, nobody can tell. A short clip, a scroll past, a thumbnail: the screen is a picture and behaves like one.

Past that, the eye starts looking for the small movements a live interface always has — a value that ticks, a percentage that crosses zero, a row that turns colour. Their absence does not read as « this is fake ». It reads as « this is a photograph someone is filming », which for a product demo is worse, because it makes the product look unfinished rather than the screen look invented.

What movement costs

Nothing, once the screen is rendered rather than pasted. A composed screen that pulls real market prices updates the fiat column on its own; the quantities stay yours, the prices are the market's, and the total follows. The alternative — editing a value between takes to fake movement — costs time and never quite matches.

What it does not buy you

Real prices on invented quantities give an invented total. The number moving on screen is not more true than a number you typed; it is more convincing, which is a different property and one worth naming. Nothing about a live feed turns a mockup into a holding, and any screen shown as proof of one is a claim regardless of where its prices came from.

Choosing

Still image, listing, deck slide, documentation: movement is irrelevant, pick your numbers and be done. Recording, live demo, looping clip: movement is the difference between a screen that reads as an app and one that does not.
