What does larp mean in crypto? Definition, examples and the LARP token
In crypto, to larp is to pretend to be more successful, more informed or more connected than you are, usually with a staged screenshot. A short definition, real examples, the LARP token you may have landed on by mistake, and the questions people ask about trading and Discord.

In crypto, to larp is to pretend: to present yourself as richer, better informed or better connected than you are, often with a staged screenshot, a borrowed profit card or a made-up insider account. The word comes from live-action role-play. It is also the ticker of several unrelated tokens, which is why searches for the meaning return price pages.
What does larp mean in crypto?
To larp in crypto is to pretend. The larper presents a success, an inside connection or a lifestyle that is not theirs, and the evidence is usually an image: a screenshot of a balance, a profit card, a rented car, an account that never says who runs it. The word is mostly said about other people, as in "that guy is larping", meaning he is a poser.
The crypto sense is narrower than the general slang because crypto has a particular supply of props. Screens are easy to compose, accounts are anonymous by habit, and a balance is a number on a phone that anyone can type. For the general slang, from the hobby to the Gen Z insult, with a dated timeline, see larp meaning: the hobby, the slang and every sense. This page is the crypto cut.
Where the word comes from
LARP stands for live action role-playing. Wikipedia describes it as a type of role-playing game in which participants physically act out their chosen characters, pursuing goals in a fictional setting shown through real-world environments. The slang verb borrowed the idea: someone who larps is playing a character in a setting that is supposed to be real.
CryptoSlate's glossary entry, first published in March 2026, defines larping in crypto and trading as pretending to be someone or something you are not, such as using a false identity, an exaggerated story or a fake insider image, so as to seem more credible, influential or successful and to shape what people think about a token, project or market story.
Crypto larping, with examples
| Example | What is staged | What would settle it |
|---|---|---|
| A profit card | One trade, shown as the result of a strategy | The account statement, with size, fees and every other trade (the crypto PnL card) |
| A wallet screenshot | A large balance, composed or borrowed | An address on a block explorer plus a message signed with its key (five tells in a wallet screenshot) |
| An anonymous "insider" | Inside knowledge that cannot be checked | Nothing, which is the point; verify claims yourself |
| A made-up announcement | A partnership or listing that does not exist | The project's own channels |
| Rich-life clips | Cars, watches and cash that suggest a result | Nothing: a lifestyle is not a statement (larp rich clips) |
| A trading screen | A demo or paper account shown as live | The broker's statement (the larp trading screen) |
404 Media reported in July 2026 on wealth larping, in which hustlebros and influencers use fake dashboards as proof of riches to sell courses. CryptoSlate's examples run along the same lines: an anonymous account posing as an insider to lend weight to its claims about a token, invented trading success, a fabricated partnership announcement. Its advice is to verify claims rather than trust someone who may be larping.
Larp the word is not the LARP token
Search for the meaning and you will get price pages. That is because LARP is also a ticker. Solana Compass's token page states that multiple tokens use the ticker LARP and lists six candidates, so a page about "LARP" may be about any of them. The word and the token share a name and nothing else: a token called LARP says nothing about whether anyone is larping, and a larper's screenshot says nothing about the token.
This site does not cover the tokens or their prices, and nothing here is a view on any of them. If you meant a token, check the contract address on the page you are on. If you meant the word, you are in the right place.
What does larp mean in trading?
In trading, larping is staging the look of a profitable trader without the record behind it. The setup is recognizable: monitors, charts, an order panel with a profit, a rented background. Nothing in the frame is evidence, because charts are public data and a demo account looks like a live one. The checklist of what gets staged, and the table of what would count as proof, are in what is larping in trading.
What does larp mean on Discord?
The same two senses apply. In a trading or crypto server, someone called a larper is accused of pretending to be rich or informed. On a role-play server, larp can simply mean the hobby. Read the channel. Communities have also formed around staged money content; larp money on Discord covers that scene and where the safe line sits.
When larping is harmless, and when it is not
Not every larp is a lie. A skit that plays with the look of wealth is a larp the audience is in on. A creator who shows a wallet screen in a video can say so in the first second. The problem is the claim: the same image offered as your real result, to get money, trust or a sale.
A larp wallet, also called a crypto wallet app simulator, is an app that shows a believable crypto wallet screen built from the balances you type in, for videos, skits, pitch decks and demos. It holds no funds and touches no blockchain.
We make one, My Larp Wallet, so you know our interest. The line we hold is the one above: a screen made with it is a prop, labeled as such, and never proof of a balance. Our terms prohibit presenting one as real. More on the line itself: the larp wallet guide and larping versus posing.
How to tell a crypto larp from the real thing
- Ask for a document a third party produced, not another screenshot.
- Look for a way to check: an address, a registration, an exchange statement.
- Be wary of a deadline. A staged result is often attached to a limited spot.
- Look at the whole account. One green day is a selection; the whole period is a record.
- Ask who is speaking. An insider with no name has no reputation to lose.
The US CFTC's advisory on social media scammers describes the usual profile: wealth flaunted, trading wins claimed, screenshots of winning trades or huge balances, and little that can be verified about the person.

Questions
What does larp mean in crypto?
To pretend. A crypto larper presents a success, an insider status or a lifestyle they do not have, most often with a screenshot of a balance or a trade, a rented background or an anonymous account posing as someone with inside knowledge. It is the crypto form of calling someone a poser.
What does larp mean in trading?
Staging the appearance of a successful trader without the record behind it: a wall of monitors, a demo account shown as live, a few winning screenshots. It becomes a problem when the staged image is used to sell a course, a signal group or an account. The longer version is in the larp trading article on this site.
What does larp stand for?
Live-action role-play: a hobby in which participants physically act out characters in a fictional setting, in real-world places. The slang use, to pretend to be something you are not, grew out of that, with the idea that the person is playing a role.
What does larp mean on Discord?
Usually the same slang: someone is pretending to be an insider, a rich trader or an expert. On a role-play server it can also mean the hobby itself. Read the channel: if the talk is about balances and calls, it is the pretend sense; if it is about characters and events, it is the game.
Is LARP the name of a crypto token?
Several tokens use the ticker LARP. Solana Compass notes that multiple tokens use the ticker and lists six candidates. The slang word and the token share a name, not a meaning, so check the contract address before you assume a page is about the one you want.
Is larping a slur?
Not in the usual sense: it is an insult meaning poser, and how sharp it feels depends on who says it and to whom. Its meaning in different circles, from the hobby to Gen Z slang, is in our larp meaning article.
What is the difference between larping and lying?
A larp can be a joke the audience is in on, or an aspiration, or a lie. It becomes a lie when it is used to get something: money, trust or a sale. A labeled skit is a prop; the same screen offered as your real balance is a false claim.
