iPhone points and pixels: the table that ends the confusion

Layout happens in points, files are measured in pixels, and the bridge between them is a single multiplication. Every current iPhone, both ways.

Points are the layout unit, pixels are the file unit, and the scale factor between them is @3× on every current iPhone: 393 × 852 pt becomes 1179 × 2556 px by multiplication, not by resizing.

A mockup, not a wallet — composed in My Larp Wallet. It holds no funds and connects to no blockchain.

Two units, one multiplication

A point is the unit your layout is written in — the same number on every device of a given size, regardless of how dense its screen is. A pixel is what the file contains. The scale factor converts one into the other, and on every current iPhone it is @3×.

This is why an export should be a render at the target size rather than a resize afterwards. Multiplying the design produces exact pixels; resizing an image produces interpolation, and interpolation is visible on type.

Where the wrong numbers come from

Device databases list the same phone under several figures — a diagonal in inches, a CSS viewport, a native resolution — and pages that copy from them mix the three. A common error puts the iPhone 17 at 1284 × 2778, which is a real size belonging to the 6.5″ class and to no iPhone 17.

The check that costs nothing: divide the pixel figure by three. If the result is not a plausible point size for that phone, one of the two numbers came from somewhere else.

The one place this bites

Uploads. The class an image belongs to is decided by its pixel size alone, so a file exported from a 402 × 874 pt design at @2× is 804 × 1748 — a number on no list, rejected without explanation. The scale factor is not a quality setting; it is part of the address.

Questions

What is the difference between points and pixels on iPhone?

Points are the layout unit you design in; pixels are the unit the file is measured in. The scale factor between them is @3× on every current iPhone — a 393 × 852 pt screen is a 1179 × 2556 px image.

Which one does App Store Connect check?

Pixels. Points never appear in the upload: the allow-list is expressed entirely in pixel dimensions.
