NGMI meaning: "not gonna make it", crypto's verdict on a bad move
The definition of NGMI, who says it about whom, illustrative posts with a tone tag, its sourced path from a bodybuilding forum to crypto, and how it pairs with WAGMI.

NGMI stands for "not gonna make it". In crypto it is a dismissive verdict that a person, a decision or a project will fail, as in "sold the bottom again, NGMI"; said about yourself, it is a joke at your own expense.
What NGMI means
NGMI stands for not gonna make it. In crypto it is a verdict: the person, the trade or the project in question is going to fail. Decrypt's 2022 slang guide defines it as a dismissive term for people or projects that will not succeed or last. CoinMarketCap Academy expands it as "never" or "not going to make it" and links it to tactics the crowd considers wrong, such as not holding through volatility or marketing a project the old-fashioned way.
It is the negative twin of WAGMI, "we're all gonna make it". Where WAGMI is collective and hopeful, NGMI is singular and final. Nobody says "we're NGMI" except as a joke.
How NGMI is used
Tone tag: mock. It can also work as a warning, and as self-mockery when people use it about their own decisions.
- Judging a trade. Selling at the bottom, buying the top, panic in public: all invite an NGMI reply.
- Judging a project. A team that misses deadlines, a token with no use, a launch with copied artwork.
- Judging a person's attitude. Refusing to learn, dismissing the asset class, or the opposite, trusting every thread.
- Self-mockery. Posting your own bad trade with "NGMI" beats someone else posting it first.
Three illustrative posts, written for this page and not quoted from anyone:
- Illustrative: "Sold at the low, bought back 20% higher. NGMI."
- Illustrative: "Six months, no product, three new logos. This team is NGMI."
- Illustrative: "Clicked a link in a DM and signed whatever it asked. NGMI behavior, check your approvals."
Two variants are worth knowing. GMI, "gonna make it", is the individual compliment ("you read the docs, GMI"). NGMI behavior labels an action rather than a person, which makes it slightly less harsh.
Where NGMI comes from
NGMI started in the gym, not the market. Know Your Meme traces the WAGMI and NGMI pair to 4chan's fitness board, /fit/, and to the bodybuilder Zyzz, who told followers in a motivational video that "we're all going to make it". A YouTube upload of that speech dated March 24, 2012 had gathered 1.7 million views. After Zyzz died in 2011, the line kept circulating on forums, with NGMI as its pessimistic mirror.
The dictionary trail fits. Urban Dictionary's top NGMI entries from August and October 2019 apply it to people with no work ethic and to a lifter who trained for a decade without results. Know Your Meme reports that crypto and meme stock communities picked up both phrases around 2020, and that the /fit/ vocabulary spread to 4chan's business board, /biz/, during the GameStop frenzy of 2021. A crypto-specific Urban Dictionary entry followed in September 2021.

None of them carries information about price. Kraken's explainer calls the pair largely meaningless as insight and warns against letting slang replace research.
Not to be confused with
Wiktionary labels the same abbreviation as medical slang as well as internet slang. Outside a trading chat, "not gonna make it" can be literal and grim, which is worth remembering before using NGMI as a joke in mixed company.

Questions
What does NGMI mean in crypto?
NGMI means "not gonna make it": the speaker thinks someone, or something, will not succeed. Decrypt defines it as a dismissive term for people or projects that will not last. CoinMarketCap Academy ties it to tactics the crowd considers wrong, such as selling instead of holding.
What is the opposite of NGMI?
WAGMI, "we're all gonna make it", and its singular form GMI, "gonna make it". Wiktionary lists them as antonyms. NGMI is a verdict on one person or move; WAGMI is a group pep talk.
Where does NGMI come from?
Know Your Meme traces the WAGMI and NGMI pair to 4chan's fitness board and the bodybuilder Zyzz, whose "we're all gonna make it" became a catchphrase. Urban Dictionary entries from 2019 use NGMI for people with no work ethic or no gains; crypto and meme stock forums adopted it around 2020 and 2021.
Is NGMI an insult?
Mostly, yes, but a light one, and it is often self-directed. Its analytical value is close to zero: Kraken's explainer calls the pair largely meaningless as market insight. Treat it as an opinion about a person, not information about a coin.
