GM meaning: "good morning", the daily crypto greeting (and gn)
What gm and gn mean, why crypto people post them every day, illustrative posts with a tone tag, a dated origin from Know Your Meme, and the other things GM stands for.
Published:
GM means "good morning". In crypto and NFT communities it is a daily greeting, posted alone or as a reply, that signals you belong to the scene; gn, "good night", usually means the poster is logging off.
What gm means
gm means good morning. In crypto and NFT circles it is the default greeting: a post that says only "gm", a reply of "gm" under someone else's post, a "gm" dropped into a Discord channel before anything else is said. Its partner, gn, means good night.
The literal meaning matters less than the function. Decrypt's 2022 slang guide describes gm as a way to spread positivity, greet others and build a sense of community among crypto and NFT traders. CoinMarketCap Academy calls it one of the most widespread memes in the scene and says plainly that nobody knows where it began. Saying gm is a small, daily signal: I am here, I am one of you, the market is open (it always is).
It is usually written in lowercase. Capitals, "GM", are common too, and mean the same thing.
How gm and gn are used
Tone tag: neutral, leaning warm. It turns mock only when used ironically, for example after a terrible night for the market.
- As a whole post. Two letters, sometimes with a coffee emoji. Replies of "gm" pile up underneath and function as a roll call.
- As a reply. A friendly way to engage with an account without having anything to add.
- As an opener. "gm" before a question or an announcement softens it. Combined with ser, "gm ser" is the most recognizable phrase in the dialect.
- gn as a sign-off. Decrypt notes that gn usually means the user is logging off. It can also mean "I have seen enough of this chart".
Time zones do not apply. Because the community is global and the market never closes, people post gm at any hour, which is part of the joke.

- Illustrative: "gm. Coffee, charts, no trades before noon."
- Illustrative: "gm to everyone who held through that candle."
- Illustrative: "Down 30% since lunch. gn."
Where gm comes from
As an abbreviation of good morning, gm is old internet shorthand. Know Your Meme notes that it has been used as a text greeting for about two decades and points to an Urban Dictionary entry for it dated September 2, 2003. Wiktionary lists it as text messaging and internet slang.
The crypto ritual is younger, and its exact start is unknown. Know Your Meme dates the earliest documented use on NFT Twitter to a reply of "Hey GM!" on March 8, 2018. Use stayed sporadic through 2018 and 2019, grew in 2020, and accelerated at the start of 2021, during the NFT boom. By September 1, 2021 it was common enough that a widely followed NFT collector posted a thread explaining it: the community says good morning because it sees itself as a friendly, optimistic, global group. Meme formats followed within days.
So did the backlash. Know Your Meme records that in November 2021 outsiders mocked the habit and criticized it as a form of gatekeeping, an in-group password rather than a greeting. Both readings are still around: to insiders gm is a hello, to skeptics it is a badge.
Not to be confused with
GM is one of the busiest two-letter abbreviations in English. Wiktionary lists, among others, General Motors, game master (the person running a role-playing game), grandmaster in chess, general manager and genetically modified. Context sorts them out. A lowercase "gm" posted alone on a crypto timeline is the greeting; "GM" next to a share price is the carmaker.

Questions
What does gm mean in crypto?
gm is short for "good morning". In crypto it is a ritual greeting posted on X, in Discord and in Telegram, often as a whole post of two letters. Decrypt describes it as a way to promote positivity and build a sense of community among traders.
What does gn mean?
gn means "good night". Decrypt notes it works like gm but in the evening, and usually signals that the person is logging off. In a 24/7 market it is also a polite way to say you are stepping away from the screen.
Why do crypto people say gm all the time?
Because it costs nothing and marks you as an insider. Know Your Meme documents a September 2021 thread by a prominent NFT collector explaining that the community says good morning because it sees itself as friendly and optimistic. Critics in late 2021 saw the same habit as gatekeeping.
Does GM mean anything else?
Yes. Wiktionary lists General Motors, game master, grandmaster, general manager and genetically modified among other expansions. In a crypto reply with no other context, lowercase gm is almost always the greeting.
